When Dark Spirit Enterprise (DSE) set out to launch the first consumer spirit brand from its groundbreaking Steel Barrel Technology, they partnered with Grid City to create a disruptive brand that would challenge one of the world's oldest categories.

The result was Breaking Barrels- a bold Australian spirit brand that blends traditional cues with a progressive visual identity.  Designed by the Grid City team, the branding combines classic typography, heritage-inspired layouts and warm premium tones to create instant familiarity, while introducing a distinctive story that sets the brand apart.

At the heart of the identity is the iconic stag, captured mid-swing as it breaks open a barrel with an axe. More than a logo, it symbolises the brand's mission to challenge centuries of conventional maturation.  The visual language reflects the innovative Steel Barrel Technology behind the liquid, which replicates the key conditions of barrel aging in a fraction of the time.

This disruptive thinking continues throughout the campaign.  Dramatic mountain landscapes are turned upside down and reimagined in vivid fluoro colours, creating a memorable visual metaphor that signals tradition has been flipped on its head.

From brand strategy and packaging design through to creative direction, campaign development and point-of-sale design, Grid City crafted a complete brand ecosystem that communicates innovation while maintaining premium shelf appeal.

The result is a spirits brand that honours heritage while confidently redefining what the future can look like. It may look like whisky, and it may taste like whisky, but Breaking Barrels is proudly Not Whisky.
